Frostburg State University will have a delayed opening from the beginning of the day shift until 11 a.m. today, Tues. Feb. 13, 2024. Classes and activities will resume, and all non-essential personnel should report to work at that time. Essential personnel should report to work as scheduled. Please continue to monitor the FSU website and social media sites for a status update which will be provided by 9 a.m.

When putting together your college financial plan, you’re certainly not limited to the programs offered by Frostburg State University and federal and state governments.

Outside civic and private organizations often have scholarships, grants and other forms of funding to offer college students. As a rule, students should check with their high school counselors, employers, parents’ employers, churches, or any other community organizations they are members of, in order to find other grant or scholarship programs that they may apply for.

Graduate Assistantships

Graduate students are eligible to apply for graduate assistantships. Assistantships at FSU are worth a stipend of $5,000 for the academic year and waiver of tuition. A graduate assistant is required to work 20 hours per week. Graduate assistants engage in research studies, projects, teaching, or other activities that are directly related to their programs of study. Graduate International Fellowships

International graduate students may apply for a Graduate International Fellowship. Fellowships are worth a stipend of $6,650 for the academic year and a waiver of tuition. State Work-Study Jobs

For those students not eligible for the Federal Work-Study Program, there are a limited number of jobs on campus available in every academic, administrative, and auxiliary area. The Financial Aid Office receives information concerning these job openings once per year, at the start of every fall semester. Interested students should contact our office during the first week of school in the fall semester if they are seeking information on open state work-study positions.

Outside Scholarships for Frostburg State Students

LaLitta Nash McKaig Scholarship Fund - The LaLitta Nash McKaig Scholarship Fund is a scholarship program designed to assist local students with the cost of attending college. To qualify, a student must be a resident of Bedford or Somerset Co., PA; Mineral or Hampshire Co., WV; or Allegany or Garrett Co., MD; and have obtained a high school education or equivalency from one of these counties. Students must also be attending an accredited college or university on a full-time basis in order to qualify. Students must meet specific academic and income criteria in order to be eligible for the LaLitta Nash McKaig Scholarship. Applicants must submit an application, along with additional application materials, to the LaLitta Nash McKaig Foundation by February 28th. Criteria: The Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship is a highly selective scholarship for the nation’s top community college students seeking to complete their bachelor’s degrees at four-year colleges or universities.  See web site for application details. 

Citizens Bank Good Citizen Scholarship - The Citizens Bank Good Citizen Scholarship Fund is a program that provides funding to students who complete an outstanding service to their community.  Applicants are asked to write an essay of no more than 500 words demonstrating their good citizenship through community volunteerism and leadership. They must also provide two references that are directly connected to their community involvement. The application period for the TruFit Good Citizen Scholarship will begin Tuesday, April 15, 2014 and run through Tuesday, May 6, 2014 or until 2,000 applications have been received, whichever occurs first. The Mary Rubin and Benjamin M. Rubin Scholarship Fund – The Mary and Benjamin Rubin Scholarship Fund is a scholarship program designed to assist women who are residents of the state of Maryland with the cost of attending college. In addition to being female and a permanent resident of the state of Maryland, students must meet specific academic and income criteria in order to be eligible for the Mary and Benjamin Rubin Scholarship Fund. Scholarship awards range from $500 to $2,500 per year, and may only be applied to tuition. Applicants must submit an application, along with additional application materials, to the Central Scholarship Bureau by March 1st. The Mary & Benjamin M. Rubin Scholarship Fund

The GE-Reagan Scholarship Program - The GE-Reagan Scholarship Program is a scholarship program designed to assist graduating high school seniors planning to attend college pursuing a bachelor's degree in Fall 2011. To qualify, a student must be a resident of the United States, demonstrate financial need, have a high school GPA of at least a 3.0, demonstrate leadership ability and be nominated by an eligible community leader and recommended by an authority figure. Applicants must submit an application, along with additional application materials, by March 18, 2011. Awards will be up to $10,000 a year, renewable for up to three additional years. The GE-Reagan Scholarship Program

The Pauletta & Denzel Washington Gifted Scholars in Neuroscience Award - Gifted Scholars in Neuroscience Awards are available to support the research in the fields of Blood-Brian Barrier and Drug Delivery into the CNS, Tumor Immunology and Cancer Vaccine, Gene Therapy, Gene Discover, and Advanced Surgical Technology. Awards are available for full-time undergraduate and graduate students majoring or intending to major in science, who are interested in performing research in the above mentioned areas. Applicants must be a citizen or permanent resident of the U.S., are expected to submit an abstract or scientific paper on their research to a national neuroscience, cancer or neurosurgery meeting at the end of their summer fellowship with the Division, and must be able to travel to Los Angeles, California, to attend the award ceremony. Haz La U (Make the U) Educational Grant - The Haz La U Educational Grant is given to legal U.S. residents of Hispanic decent who are seniors in high school and wish to attend college. Students must be at least 16 years old and matriculate to a college within two years of receiving the award. Sixteen awards are given. There will be one grand prize of $10,000 and 15 first prizes of $1,000 each. There can only be one winner per household. To apply, students must complete an application form and write an essay on the topic of how education can impact the heritage of Hispanic generations to come. USM Women's Forum Scholarship Fund - The USM Women's Forum Scholarship Fund provides several $500 scholarships to eligible undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in an USM institution. These awards are available to both men and women. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen enrolled in a USM institution, have a minimum 2.8 GPA, have completed 48 or more undergraduate credits or 9 or more graduate credits, and provide proof of financial need. Applicants must submit a complete application, as well as copies of official transcripts, copies of federal tax statements or financial aid statements for the previous two years, and a personal statement documenting short and long-term educational and career goals. Completed applications along with supporting documentation must be received no later than June 30, 2008. Preferred candidates will be residents of the State of Maryland and be pursuing educational and career goals that focus on the social, economic, political, scientific, and health conditions that impact women. Spectrum Women's Opportunity Award - Awards are available to women who are have the primary responsibility of supporting their family (including children, spouse, siblings and/or parents). Graduate Teaching Scholarships from CSB - The Central Scholarship Bureau has several scholarships available to graduate students who are aspiring to become teachers, including the Straus Foundation Grant for Teachers, which is a grant of up to $5,000 given to graduate students in education planning to teach math or science in the Baltimore City Public Schools; the BHD Endowed Scholarship Fund for Teachers, which provides scholarship funding for graduate students planning to teach in public schools upon graduation; and the Kassap Family Scholarship Fund for Teachers, which provides 4 scholarships of up to $5,000 each to graduate education students, with preference given to those planning to teach in Maryland public schools. The CSB requires a minimum GPA of 2.0 and a maximum family income of $91,000 per year (the median for the State of Maryland) for most of its programs. The Bedford County Conservation District Scholarships - The Bedford County Conservation District has two scholarships available to undergraduate students who are studying in the field of environmental science. Students must be taking courses in natural resources, soils, plants, animal science, agriculture or forestry. You must be at least a college sophomore to apply. The scholarships will be awarded based on financial need, academic merit, curriculum of study, quality of the written essay, and career goals that are consistent with the mission of the Bedford County Conservation District. The deadline for the William Plank Memorial Scholarship is June 30. The deadline for the Glen Beach Memorial Scholarship is May 31. Veterans United Foundation Scholarship Program - The Veterans United Foundation sponsors an essay contest where the prize is up to $20,000 in scholarship funds. Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund - The Freedom Alliance Scholarship fund provides scholarships to full-time, undergraduate students under the age of 24 who are the dependent son or daughter of a U.S. service member who, as the result of an operational mission or training accident has become permanently disabled (100% VA disability rating), was killed in action, or is classified as a POW or MIA. MAC-IECA Scholarship - The Freedom Alliance Scholarship fund provides scholarships to students who are enrolled in 4 year colleges or universities considering a career in erosion and sediment control or a related field. The fields include, but are not limited to Biology, Environmental Science, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Natural Resource Management, Geology, Forestry, Agricultural Science, and Environmental Education. MD Forestry Board Scholarships- The MD Forestry Board Foundation provides scholarships to students who are 2nd semester freshman, sophomores, juniors, or seniors residing in MD, PA, VA or WV, who are majoring in forestry or a related field. The student must show an interest in forestry conservation and have at least a 2.0 GPA. Students may be full or part-time. Scholarships are given in the amount of $1,000. DC Tuition Assistance Grant Program - The D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant Program provides funding to Washington D.C. students to attend post secondary institutions anywhere in the nation. Under this program, the federal government pays the difference between in-state tuition and out-of-state tuition. Need is not a determining factor. To be considered for this award you must be a resident of Washington D.C., and you must complete D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant application. Criteria:    Available to students who live within the service area of the Western Maryland Health System and are currently accepted or enrolled in a health care curriculum. A minimum 3.0 GPA is required and must be maintained to receive payment.  Online Application

Conroy Scholarship - The Conroy Scholarship is available to Maryland residents attending a Maryland School. It is available to veterans who are disabled 25% or more and have exhausted their veterans benefits; sons and daughters of persons killed or 100% disabled as a result of military service; sons, daughters or spouses of persons killed or 100% disabled as a result of employment as a state or local public safety employee; sons, daughters, or surviving spouses of someone killed during the 911 attacks; persons declared MIA or a POW during the Vietnam War, or sons and daughters of such persons. The deadline for this scholarship is July 15th and applications should be turned into the Financial Aid Office at FSU. The award amount varies, depending on the amount on your cost of attendance and other financial aid resources.
